Last Week… Last Session of Term and Presentation

Monday, July 18th, 2011

Well, we certainly finished the term on a high with a fantastic presentation this week! The students rehearsed hard and then treated their audience to a selection of work that they’d done over this last term as well as giving some fine demonstrations of how we work on a Saturday afternoon! The presentation was entitled ‘Lines and Spaces’ and featured some of the work we’d created in the style of Pina Bausch as well as an amazing ‘linked monologue’ piece from the Seniors. We then sat back and enjoyed a slide show on the Big Screen – featuring some of the years highlights here at theatrecenter. We then finished the afternoon with our very own Oscar (or as we like to call them, the theatrecenter ‘Tuftys’!) ceremony, where we recognised the amazing progress that all our students have made over the last year. It was quite an emotional affair as we also said goodbye to long term theatrecenter family member, Eleanor Hyland~Stanbrook who is off to study Art at St Martins in the Autumn; we will miss you Eleanor but wish you every success in what we know is going to be a very bright future! So, another year over… But we’re already looking forweard to next term and another great year at theatrecenter!!

Happy holidays n see you in the Autumn!

James Pegg was our performance mentor this week and he worked with the students on some of the pieces we’re hoping to show next week as well as giving them some individual work on Lines and Spaces! The Juniors created a very exciting Random Word Movement piece, the Seniors flexed their Monologue muscles and put together a very interesting performance incorporating all the monologues in one piece of Drama and we all worked together on our joint Follow My Leader presentation. Presentation next week? Bring it on!!

Ben Murray Watson was back by popular demand and created some fantastic atmospheric secenes with the Junior group, building on the work started last week with Jane Lesley. The Seniors worked hard on their monologue pieces and were treated to a Romeo and Juliet Masterclass, examiningvarious scenes and exploring Shakespeare’s text and it’s hidden dramatic clues.

Last Week…

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011

Last week we welcomed the fabulous Jane Lesley back to theatrecenter. She did some excellent work with  the students on Monologues & ‘cold reading’ techniques; and by the end of the session every student had performed their own audition speech. The Juniors also worked on a short ‘travelling’ scene from Hansel & Gretel and of course we created 2 pieces of Random Word Theatre! This week we divided into 2 groups and devised 2 different pieces using exactly the same ideas; The students chose 3 Random Words (Inside, Forget and Know) and picked (at Random!) a location (inside a deflating Bouncey Castle!), an opening line (“Excuse me, my giraffe has bird flu – can you help me?” Thank you Charlie…), a line that had to be included at some point (I like strawberries) and a closing line (Good Morning!)! Despite a pretty tricky remit, the students managed to include all the elements and produced 2 hilarious (but quite different) pieces of Drama.
