This week we had a fascinating session on Meisner Technique. Melody Roche (Actress, Director & Meisner Practitioner) introduced us to this challenging but rewarding acting method, with some amazing results. We looked at the use of repetition to uncover meaning in words and how this repetition changed the course of a scene; how it’s not necessarily what you say but how you say it; and the idea of ‘being’ rather than ‘acting’. We also continued work on ‘Red Riding Hood’ and ‘Mummy Boy’ using some of our newly developed Meisner skills!!

Actor/Producer/Director and Film Maker, James Weisz was our visiting tutor this week and he gave us a fantastic session on Silent Movies!
We watched a short film from the early 1900s and observed the use of characters, body language, mime, music and caption within the piece; we then went on to create some silent movies of our own!

It was very much a physical session this week! James Pegg (one of our most popular actor/directors!) warmed our brains & voices up with some tricky tongue twisters; and our bodies with an exploration of puppet movements (both as individuals and in pairs) and what happens when we put on an article of clothing that changes the way we feel!! We then moved on to some ensemble work – creating physical images for random words – which we strung together to create 2 extraordinarily effective movement pieces with soundtrack: “Mountain/Explosion/Fluid/Rigid/Falling” and “Openings/Lifting/Supporting/Closing”. We also began work on 2 poems that we could stage using the fabrics, hoops & poles: Roald Dahl’s ‘Red Riding Hood’ and ‘Mummy Boy’ by Tim Burton. We will continue to work on these pieces over the coming weeks!

We are also aware that it is the Children’s Parade today which means that traffic in town will probably be a bit of a nightmare! We hope that it won’t affect your journey too much…!

We had a great start to the new term with a double whammy of teachers – the fabulous Jane Lesley and Ben Murray-Watson – who really put the students through their paces with some challenging work on improvisation techniques; A challenge that both the juniors and seniors really rose to! We also started looking at the use of basic props (hoops, poles and fabrics) to create setting, atmosphere and symbolism in a theatrical piece, which resulted in 2 very different pieces: A comedy ‘Jazz War’ and the story of a Raven and a Dove.
